confuse about tests?

by confusedGonorrhea, Nov 29, 2005 12:00AM
Dear Doc,

Searched your articles and found  some info about false-positive tests but not enough for my situation.

Could you please, explain this:

I took STD test - everything was negative, except Gonorrhea - positive. Was totally shocked!!! Couldn't believe it, so  one week later took another std test - all test negative including Gonorrhea - negative. Was confused, my doc couldn't totally explain the situation, then i decided to go to another doc (like a week later), she performed tests on my throat and vagina and all other stds tests, everything came back negative (again including Gonorrhea).

OUTCOME: 1 positive for Gonorrhea, and 2 other negative.

i don't know what to think, the only thing is bothering me now is that i have yeast infection or it is yeast infection? since my 1st test was positive for Gonorrhea.  I would appriciate if you can expain my situaion on wheather i have Gonorrhea or not? it is so weird and now i am afraid to go to a doc with yeast thinking that i might still have Gonorrhea.

Oh, by the way i didn't have any symptoms, plus my current partner doesn't complain about anything at all. I took initial tests after a month since my exposure with my old partner. Now, its been 4 months since my exposure with my old partner.

thanks in advance and

sorry, for any confusion about my story,

maria

The most likely explanation is that the positive test was false.  However, you don't say anything about your previous partnership and whether that person was likely to have other partners during the winding-down period of that relationship.  (The beginning and end of a relationship tends to be a high-risk time for STDs.  That's because of "concurrent partnerships", i.e. a common tendency to start a new sexual relationship before the old one ends.)  Gonorrhea goes away by itself, so it is conceivable that you were infected and had the expected spontaneous cure between you postive test and the 2 negative ones.  But this is speculating, and it's still most likely that the test was falsely positive.  To be absoltely safe, it would be a good idea for both your previous partner and your new one to be tested as well.  It was medically conservative and reasonable for your doctor to treat you just in case, just to be safe.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

Did you have any antibiotic treatment of any kind for anything else, after the first positive test, and before the negative ones?

I took antibiotic (one pill) ONLY after 3rd test AND ONLY because the doc advised me to do so. (just in case).

thank you very much for your answer. i would like to say that as far as i know (but who knows if its true or not)the old partner told me that he went and checked himself and they didnt find anything. But again, it was his words and i didnt see the proof of it.

the only problem i took the antibiotic but my current partner didnt. And thats the reason of me asking you a question about did i or didnt i had Gonorrhea?
