i have urethritis

by oxyone, Dec 21, 2005 12:00AM
Hello doctor,

Here is my situation. About one week ago like around Dec 12 i started to have itchiness in my uretha didn't think much of it. BUt as another week went by it was very uncomfortable so i decided to go to the yesterday and he did a urinalysis and found that i have urethritis. He prescribed a 7 days supply of Ciprofloxacin & Doxycycline. At the moment im trying to figure out when i go this disease. Here are my exposure and test.

-September 26 received unprotected oral sex for about 10-15 secs from a prostitude

-October 7 went to get tested for std's and HIV.

-October 14 all test came back negative.

-November 21st received protected oral sex from a prostitude.

-December 8th went to get tested for STDs. Doctor gave me some meds just in case i caught anything. Didn't ask what the meds were but i was about 4 pink pills and 4 blue pills.

- December 15th got results and tested negative for STD's

These are my exposures. Im hesitant to ask tell you this but i dont know if my mind is playing tricks on me but on Dec 10 after i long night of drinking i decided to drive along some streets looking for prostitudes but dont remember if i did. I think i would have remebered if i did. MY mind keeps telling me i might have done something now that i got urethritis. But really after thinking about it i could n't have done that because i had no money on me. Plus it was like 300am and there was nobody on the street. Just though i tell you this to ease my mind.

How long does it have symptoms of urethritis? Considering my exposures where could i have gotten this disease. Doctor said its related to clamydia.

Also the meds that i mentioned will they do the job in curing this disease.

Doctor i appreaciate for listening and hope to hear any helpful infomration. Thank you.

Even for patients with NGU who I personally examine in the STD clinic, I generally shy away from playing the game of where and from whom the infection was caught.  But most cases of NGU are acquired 2-3 weeks before symptoms began, although it probably can take longer. Condom-protected oral sex is entirely safe, so that's not a possible source.  The negative STD tests really don't help much.  More than 60% of sexually acquired NGU is caused by bacteria that are not detected by routine STD testing.  Chlamydia causes only 25% to 40% of cases, but presumably the tests included chlamydia, so that's unlikely in your case.

Bottom line:  You may never know exactly when and where you acquired the infection.  But your doc is right that the combination of doxycycline and ciprofloxacin should take care of the problem.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

The doc has said on here that you cannot get chlamydia from oral sex. If you are going to prostitutes and getting an std test after each encounter, you have a lot of anxiety of around this and STDs seemd to be on your mind a lot. Did the meds help?  If not, it is probably anxiety. If they do help, in light of negative tests, you probably have some inflamation caused by normal mouth bacteria. Not an STD per se.

i didn't know you could get clamydia from oral sex. I do have a burning/itching sensation in my uretha. But when i pee it doesn't burn or itch at all. Plus i have no discharge of any kind. Im just curious to know how could i have gotten urethritis considering that on Dec 8 i got tested and got my result back on dec 16 and tested negative. Plus the doc gave me some meds just in case. But it was on Dec 12 that i started to get that buring / itching in my uretha. Now on Dec 21 another doctor find out i have  urethritis.

Does anyone know if the swelling of the spleen associated with Mononucleosis might feel like a stabbing pain in the left part of the chest when inhaling?  thanks...

by oxyone, Dec 22, 2005 12:00AM
One more question for you doctor. The information was very helpgul thanks.

Would urethritis symptoms such as burning and itching sensation show up in 2-3 after exposure. Just wanted to know. Thanks again for the helpful information

To: aldo01, puccinitenor
aldo01:  Time frame is missing.  2-3 hours, no.  2-3 days, maybe, but such a short time would suggest gonorrhea. 2-3 weeks, yes, typical for chlamydia and other kinds of NGU.  2-3 months usually would be too long.

puccinitenor:  Normally I don't respond to thread-shift questions, but yours could be important. An enlarged spleen itself probably would not cause such pain.  But an acutely enlarged/inflamed spleen is susceptible to rupture, with risk of extremely serious internal bleeding--and pain like you describe can be an early symptom of rupture or bleeding.  Such a person should see a health care provider immediately.

since i have urethritis in which category of STS's does it really fall in is it clamydia or gonoreah. Im not really sure.

ohh and it was 2-3 days.

Thanks for the help.

I think what the doc was saying is that it is not either chlamydia or gonnorrea. You cannot get chlmydia from oral. Plus you tested negative for both. If you have ureathitis it is due to normal bacteria from the persons mouth or some other irritation.  Also, it is not something you can pass to a partner.

imdumb thanks for the reply. By the way im here loosing my mind. I keep thinking that two weeks ago on a saturday after a long night of drinking i might have picked up a prostitude. But i can't seem to recall that incident. I mean i was driving and i also stopped by to get some food, but for some reason once i started to get that discomfort in my uretha my mind went everywhere. Just the fact of me driving around looking for prostitudes makes me think that i might have picked up one. But i have no recollection of how she looked. PLus it was like 2:30 in the morning and i remeber thinking to myself damn there is nobody on the streets. After this i remember going to go get somehting to eat. Do u think i would have remebered if i did something that enormous.

one more thing.

Can urethritis be caused by masterbating with a condom and not cleaning the condom resedue off the penis. I tend to do this alot when masterbating. Can it be some sort of irritation by teh condom

by Imdumb, Dec 22, 2005 12:00AM
I would think if you remember driving around and going to the store you would remember picking someone up. Did you have any money missing?  It doesn't matter anyway, you tested negative right?

by oxyone, Dec 22, 2005 12:00AM
to tell you the truth i had no money on me because i was buying some friends some drink and after i spent my money i started using my atm. Plus i also paid for my food at Jack in the box with my atm.

by Imdumb, Dec 22, 2005 12:00AM
For the record, I don't think you picked anyone up. Also for the record, I doubt you caught anything. 20 seconds of unprotected is not likely to give you ureathitis. And the protected oral is 100% safe. On top of that, you tested negative for all STDs, TWICE!  Given that you got tested after each incident, shows you are anxious and looking for symptoms now. I think it is in your mind and you are hyper aware of you penile sensations. Forget it and give up hookers. It isn't worth the stress.
