Groin Lymph node

by Mr. worrier, May 24, 2006 12:00AM
Thank you for having this website!

I am a 27 years old stright male; back in Nov. I had a circle of bumps on my spine line towards my lower back. groin lymphnode in both sides were swollen. ( started from one side and then the other side). I went to Dr. and they said it is Zoster, took Acyclovir, and everything was fine. recommend a HIV test which I took and the result was negative. The test was the new technique that they check with the oral fluid. FDA says 99% accuracy. Also I had Herpes test and result was negative. Since then I haven't change any partner, except one time that I went to a vacation and a hooker gave me oral sex while she used a condom, no kissing or any other sexall actions.(that was more than 1 month ago).

a week ago that I was really stress bc of my PHD exam my right groin node started to getting hard. with a very minor pain. I started monitoring my temp, and result was no showing any fever, the day before the exam the left side started to swell as well ( size less than 1 cm but feelable by hand. and no skin reaction this time. Met with my doc. and asked her to run all the STD and HIV test for peace of mind, blood count, inflamation, liver and kidney test. the result of blood count, infl. liver, and kidney are all normal and I haven't heard back the rest yet. Physical exam didn't show any other lymph nodes to be swollen at all on my other part of body. BUT I AM SCARED!!! and can't sleep. PLease give me some info how related it could be with hiv and other std's....

There are many causes of lymphadenopathy (the medical term for lymph node inflammation and enlargement), especially in the groin, and STDs are not the most common.  Since your current STD risk is low (zero from your vacaction exposure), you can be certain whatever is going on isn't herpes or any other STD.  Most cases of unilateral lymphadenopathy in the groin are never explained and go away by themselves.

So I predict all the tests in the works will be negative. From an STD perspective, the greatest likelihood of a positive result is that you'll turn out to have HSV-2, since 25% of the population (in the US) has it; and it is conceivable (but doubtful) that your zoster was misdiagnosed and you actually had HSV-2.  Even that is unlikely.  But if so, you and your doc will need to discuss whether your lymphadenopathy is related to the test result or coincidental.  Whatever is going on, HIV is not in the picture at all.

Bottom line:  Relax and wait for the test results, with confidence that you probably have no STD, probably nothing serious at all, and definitely not HIV.
