any idea of prognosis?

by hiker, Feb 19, 2005 12:00AM
My 67 yr. old, diabetic, overweight, ex-smoker of a father had a stroke in early January. They did a CT the first day which showed nothing, and repeated it on the 3rd day. The second scan showed a lesion and on the 4th day he received an MRI. They said that he had a lesion in the right pons of the brainstem. The past month has been riddled with other medical problems from aspiration pneumonia to PEG tube placement complications. He has received little therapy. He is speaking better, but cannot move his left side at all, except for some subtle eyelid movement. He has a trach tube placed to protect his airway. My problem is that no one has discussed prognosis with me and I have no idea what to expect. Do most patients recover, or are they bedridden with no movement on the affected side? Do most patients end up in nursing homes after an event like this? I would just like to try and get an idea of what his chances are, and what to expect from here on out. Thank you so much for your time.

It's been a week my mom lost left side movement and the ability to swallow. I am trying to utilize the brains of everyone that is responsible for my mothers care. I ask to speak to the doctor even if the rounds are already made and I request to see any notes that have been taken.

I also utilize the internet and asked for any pamplets on stroke. But I understand your frustration, so far I have 4 different prognosis on my mom. But what I gathered from all the different bodies is that therapy is vital, so we are trying to find a facility that will see her. She has no insurance and this is our struggle.

Keep positive, ask questions, do research. Talk to people that have been thru this before. Try to start theraphy asap.
