Affect of hyperthyroid on libido

by engnenk, Mar 05, 2006 12:00AM
I am a 40 yo woman and have been recently diagnosed as being hyperthyroid and don't really know what to expect as far as side effects of the treatment. My endocrinologist wants to start me with meds on Monday.

What drove me to get diagnosed is my low libido. For the past seven years my libido has been zero (and I do mean zero, no relations at all). It got to the point recently that my husband delivered an ultimatum that I either seek medical advice or he was going to leave. Much to my suprise, I was diagnosed as hyper and not hypo.

My question is whether my medication will have any impact on my libido. My husband has been very supportive and is the one that urged me to get medical help. However, I fear that both he and I might have unrealistic expectations about the impact that medication might have on my. If I undedrstand everything that I have been reading, the medication might actually have the opposite effect (is it possible to go to less than zero?).

Please help me out by prooviding some words of experience here.

Thyroid dysfunction can inhibit libido -- the meds that directly treat the thyroid should not further lessen libido but the meds that are often used to control heart rate (beta-blockers such as inderal and atenolol) can lower libido.  If the thyroid overactivty caused the libido problem, correcting it certainly may help.  Other meds can cause low libido as well - make sure to go over list of meds with your doc.  Also consider asking the endo to check testosterone and DHEA-s.
