Hyper -Tapazole Dosage change

by alish2006, Jul 15, 2006 12:00AM
Hi,

Endo

said to bring the Tap down to 5mg every other day and test every 2

weeks for a while. Then he will find a maintenance dose if i choose

to stay on Tapazole. He feels that at that point RAI would be the

thing to do. I stated that doesn't make sense if i got in range in

less than 50 days on Tap (actually went normal after 18 days). I am

striving for full remission...he said not to get my hopes up..but yes

i have made significant progress, but usually doesn't last an RAI

will be best. I am totally surprised that he said this, as RAI

was not mentioned until now. Oh--and 5mg Tap is the lowest dose to

achieve anything....that is wrong as I have been taking 3.75 per day

and they have changed dramatically.   31 days on 7.5 then 14 days on 3.75 per day and these are the results.

Labs-July 12, 2006--put on 5mg Tap every other day by Dr.

FT3 2.2 (2.3-4.2)

FT4 .075 (0.61-1.76

TSH 1.237 (0.350-5.500)

ALT 14 (0-40)

Labs-June16th,2006--put on 5mgs Tap by Dr. (taking 3.75)

50 mgs Inderal (now 17.5)

FT3- 2.8 (2.3-4.2)

FT4- 0.79 (0.61-1.76

TSH- .0009 (0.350-5.500)

ALT- 45 (0-40)

Labs-May 19, 2006--put on 20mgs Tap by Dr. (started on 7.5mgs)

60 mgs Inderal

FT4 - 1.64 (0.61-1.76)

FT3- 6.7 (2.3-4.2)

TSH - .0006 (0.350-5.500)

TSI - 82 (<130)

ALT-19 (0-40)

What do you suggest?

You are having a good response to tapazole -- would continue a low dose (2.5/day or 5 every other day) for 12 months and see if remission can be achieved. I-131 can be a back-up plan but there seems to be no reason to try a full course of anti-thyroid meds first.

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease 4 1/2 years ago. I was on Tapezole for years. In November 2005, I was told to come off of Meds., as I was in remission. I have my blood checked every 4 weeks and so far so good. Just wanted to get my 2 cents worth in because I never see anyone talking about the possibility of remission.  By the way, I was sent to an endo. that can perform the RAI for a consult, and it was he who said I was in remission and took me off the Tapezole.

Thank you for the encouragement.   I have always been quick to react to any medicines.  (As seen in these labs)  Also, i have not waivered from the treatment, diet, walking, yoga, accupuncture since i was diagnosed in April....after the initial weeks of horror! lol

I am hoping to be in remission within two more months tops. Will let you know when/if, it happens.

You are correct, hearing good stories gives us hope..rather than feeling we are in for it for years!

All the best..
