Hyperthyroid

First of all thanks for taking my question. Two weeks ago I woke up early one morning feeling shakey, nervous, a tad short of breath and a bit disoriented.  My heart was pounding and beating fast. I ended up going to the ER the heart rate there was 280 bpm.  It resulted in atrial fibrilation and that ended up in a small stroke. (No paralyses, memory loss anything.) I was diagnosed hyperthyroid because of Graves disease. My question is this: Is it really possible that the hypethyroid would have caused the atrial fibrilation? and could  there be any residual effects on the heart? I really did not have severe symptoms before this.  I am on 10mg of methimazole once a day  and 100mg of toprolXL twice a day. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks Bunches.

Absolutely -- a-fib is one of the main reasons we treat HYPER (and avoid over-treating HYPO).  The heart muscle (if damaged) will recover from the effects of hyperthyroidism once you are treated.  The only strange thing about your history is the sudden onset of symptoms -- I have seen this with hyperthyroidism, but usually it's a gradual/steady increase.
