Left eye swelling

by golden_goddess, Oct 20, 2006 12:00AM
Since I haven't "officially" been diagnosed with Graves Disease....pending RAI Uptake test and MRI....all other tests, my left eye swelling and information from my MD and Opthamologist, indicate that is what I am now faced with. Since I also have Hep C I have decided on not taking any meds which I have read are very toxic to the liver but will opt for radioiodine or surgery and then take thyroid med for life.  My question is:  after treatment will the swelling in my eye EVER decrease?  It isn't really bulging out a lot and the upper lid has retracted a bit. I have read conflicting reports.  Thanks

You need to treat the eye before I-131.  The eye may be prominent just due to the hyperthyroidism -- the ophthalmologist should be able to sort this out and determine if there is active Graves Orbitopathy.  If the eye disease is severe, some may even suggest surgery over I-131 but with appropriate steroid treatment of the thyroid eye disease, I-131 can be given safely in most cases without aggravating the eye disease and likely improving the eyes over time.  Depending on severity of hyperthyroidism, a short course of tapazole may be indicated before surgery or I-131 -- again, depends on severity, age and other health issues.

I like to look at TSH - Receptor Antibodies as well (TBII & TSI) --- these tend to correlate (perhaps TBII > TSI ?) with severity of eye disease in graves.

Thanks for the info...I am guessing I-131 is the RAI treatment?  Does that tend to aggrivate Graves eye symptoms and make bulging more prominent?

OK....mild Graves diagnosis yesterday.  Doc think a low dose 5mg of Tapazole might be the answer.  I also have Hep C and am worried about taking Tapazole.  A leading Hep C doc said it was ok but to monitor my liver function tests on a regular bases.  Any feedback on Tapazole?  thanks
