Graves with normal blood tests?

by CubsFan, Apr 06, 2007 12:00AM
Hi Doctor,

To start at the beginning, I went to my GP for a check up 2 weeks ago, and he said my thyroid was slightly enlarged and sent me for an US.  The result from that was that I had a complex nodule.  He said that concerned him and sent me for RAI-U and scan.  THe results of that said "most consistent with Graves disease" my 6-hr levels were 24.7 and my 24 hours was 50.6.  It also said "homogeneous radiotracer distribution with pyramidal lobe."  Can you explain what that means?  They also said the nodule could not be seen, likely due to small size and location.  My GP said all of my bloodwork was normal though.  I have noticed symptoms that include being exhausted frequently but not being able to sleep, being irritable, weight loss of 16 lbs in 6 weeks without trying.

I appreciate any insight you can provide.

This is not conclusive for Graves disease.  The scans are really not that helpful for most nodule evaluations.  If the US shows a mass and the TSH is normal, the next step is FNA depending on mass size (ie if >1cm or >1.5cm depending on who you see).

Would recheck thyroid function panel and add TSI, TPO-ab, Tg-ab to that lab -- this can be done in about 6 weeks to ensure the thyroid function is normal.

I don't think this will help. Sorry
My sister in law is Hyper,  she had symptoms of Graves.  I asked her if they did any testing for it.  She said it was an elimination process, if you have thyroid disease and reasons unknown its assumed Graves.  I am not sure how it works but maybe you could stress to the Dr. about doing other thyroid tests on you.
