Confused and Worried

by lil_dollie, Jul 30, 2007 12:00AM
Hi I am a 36 yr. old female and was diagnosed with Grave's disease in Feb. of 2007. I took PTU for a month and then my endo switched me to Methimazole. I had normal labs in May so decided to go on and do RAI and it has been 9 wks ago exactly. I felt really good up until this past Wednesday. I started to have all of my hyper symptoms again and it is like the Methimazole has quit working. I had to continue the Methimazole a week after I had RAI. Well I had labs drawn this past Friday and they are still showing stable normal. At least that is what the endo told me this morning. Why would I be having all of these hyper symptoms again. I am having an elevated heart rate, palps, everytime I eat I have to go to the bathroom and I can't sleep good. I am hot some of the day and then freezing the rest of the day with no fever. The only thing good so far is that my small goiter doesn't seem to be as big as it was a week or 2 ago. I am just very confused. I go back this Thursday to see him, but what could be happening?

Are you still on the methimazole?  Would consider stopping if so and if labs normal.  The symptoms suggest hyperthyroid, but the labs are normal as of 3 days ago -- would give it some more time and consider (re)starting a beta blocker (ie, propanolol, atenolol) until things definitely stabilize.  Also make sure both T4 and T3 were tested along with TSH.

It sometimes takes 2-4 months for things to settle after I-131 treatment in terms of symptoms and sometimes even labs...

I heard some people will have temporary hyper after the RAI. If you go to Thyroid support website, you may find more information. Of course the doctor here can tell you more details. Good luck to you.
