may be having a thyroid storm or a dangerous complication

by whitwhit, Aug 20, 2005 12:00AM
I was diagnosed with graves disease approx. 5 yrs ago. I was prescribed PTU as well as Toprol XL to take some of the strain away from my heart. At the time my thyroid levels were dangerously high, however, have been relatively maintained over the last few yrs. The problem is that over the last couple of months I have noticed some severe changes in my health. I have always had a small goiter, however, in the last month or so it has gotten so enlarged to the point I have difficulty swallowing normal amounts of food. I am severely depressed (I have experienced a great deal of emotional trauma over the past year), I am tired and weak to the point of not being able to perform daily tasks w/o feeling completely overwhelmed, and I have been experiencing insomnia. What really concerns me is through the duration of the last 2 or 3 weeks, during the night after taking my medication, I have been woken by the inability to take deep breaths or hardly breathe at all (it feels as though my lungs are filled with fluids), I have woken up with fevers up to 102 degrees, I have been experiencing tingling in my toes and fingers, chest pains, abdominal cramping, abdominal swelling, pains in my sides that almost bring me to my knees and then quickly pass, a sore throat, wheezing, RADICAL mood swings and a general state of confusion and delerium. My heart often feels as though it is pounding and my heart rate averages 130 bpm. After doing some research I have found that my symptoms seem to correlate with that of a thyroid storm. I would GREATLY appreciate advice anyone has to offer, I'm terrified!

Hi, sorry to hear you're feeling so bad! I too have graves.

Have you been to the Dr to check out your thyroid levels? if not you should do that ASAP or go to the Dr as it sounds like you're having pretty bad symptoms. You mentioned stress, stress can be responsible for getting your thyroid out of range, it's happened to me in the past. What my endo does (after checking my levels) it's adjust my meds and monitor closely my levels as usually they come down again after the stressful situation passes. Please, don't delay and go to the Dr, 130 HR is too much for your heart.

Hope you feel better and pls keep us posted.
