underlying CFS or fibromalagnia

by tina999, Sep 12, 2005 12:00AM
Hey all,

After the below post about chronic pain and the ongoing commentary on adrenal disease, I was wondering if by chance some of us may have had underlying CFS/fibromalagnia issues that were exposed by the the thyroid disease treatment.  Low levels of cortisol seem to play some role in those disorders-albeit not well understood.

That would explain why most people are fine but a small percentage develop problems.

Also does anyone have any idea how often drs go past the ACTH stim test in looking for adrenal problems?

The JAMA article I found said that you can pass an ACTH stim test and still be adrenal insufficient-you may fail the more in depth tests.  The context was in glucocorticoid withdrawal but all the clinical sympotoms are the same.

any ideas?

The ACTH test you mention for glucocorticoid withdrawal is a different clinical situation (ie, pituitary suppression of ACTH production from long-term steroid treatment) -- this may be better "teased-out" with the low dose ACTH test not the standard test.  This does not apply (we think) to primary adrenal insufficiency where the standard ACTH test is very effective at determining who needs lifelong steroid treatment - there are borderline cases where a trial of steroids may be worthwhile.

Thyroid treatment does not bring out fibromyalgia (FM) - FM seems to be more common in thyroid patients and some of the symptoms overlap as you well know with both thyroid and adrenal deficiency.  Aggressive treatment of hypothyroidism is important for FM patients.

Hi,  If you go to google.com and put in "Hypothyroidism CFS and Fibromyalgia", the first page of articles pops up. Click on the one by "bellaonline.com", it's the 2nd one down. Also click on the one by "thyroid.about.com", titled "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, and Autoimmune Thyroid Disease", it's the 4th one down. Others on the page and pages of articles that follow will give you some interesting reading!

Mary Shomon, author of that second article described above, was diagnosed FMS/CFS, along with her Hashi's Disease. She has it in remission now according to her book "living well With Autoimmune Disease", which I also highly recommend.

Thanks for your informative posts!

Hi, Are the number of questions on this forum now being limited?  While we are all very grateful to have a physician to answer some questions, I think the site has also become a support group of sorts for those of us with complications in our thyroid disease treatment.   Is there any way we can unlimit the questions posted and still allow Dr. Mark to answer just two questions a day?  That way we can all still discuess certain issues without preventing new users from posting questions.

To: Tina999(I think he's on vacation)
Tina, my suspicion is that Drmark is on vacation right now. I could be wrong about that. He is probably set up on his home or office computer, to answer the questions, so if away on vacation, couldn't use another one or laptop because I don't think he would just not answer, seeing it would only take him probably 10 minites a day to answer two questions. Anyway, if he is on vacation, it is probably well deserved.

I don't think they are counting our correspondence and  posts to eachother as "questions for the Dr.", at least I hope they're not because if they are, the Dr. questions will seldom ever be answered!

Hi, Tnt, i was suspecting the same thing, there have been several times that they do not allow me to post new questions and have also noticed that it only totals 2 new posts a day, so I was wondering if that is all they are allowing, because that is all the dr, is going to answer, I hope not as well, because  half of us on here, are not on here to talk with the dr, per say, so if this is the case, I hope that medhelp, takes this into consideration, Thanks Shannon

I'm sorry I meant to write Tina above, sorry

Hey you guys,

Just as I thought all was fantastic I have noticed a new problem cropping up.  I have been taking the florinef for a week and I am up to 25 ug of levoxyl for the second day in a row.  However every day I have noticed feeling a liitle "yucky" towards the afternoon with achiness in my joints and ligaments and my stomach feels weird.   It gets a bit worse everyday but mostly goes away if I go out and run amile or so.   So I have been running a mile evryday for the past four or five days.   I have gained five pounds back since starting the florinef but I lost almost fifteen going in and out of the ER.

It looks like I may have not escaped the cortisol issue afterall.

The post just before yours Ar, is that an e-mail Tina999 is quoting? I wondered because it came as if from her forum name, which doesn't make sense since it is from Med-Help.

It would be nice to know why Drmark left. Without knowing, we assume someone offended him or he's on vacation and not answering the 2-questions a day etc....... We are left having to guess. I actually mentioned this senario happening, in a past post I made. I honestly believed this change was coming. I'll not go into why I believe it is happening but will say I'm glad for the help so many people got while it lasted. I believe a weeding out process is now in motion. That's okay, they are not obligated to do this and was really generous of them, these past months.

i wonder what fms and adrenal gland problems might interact also hypothyroid on top of it.  I have major pains thoughout my body the doctor has put me on predisone for my adrenal glands not working right and has asked to sell me in about 6 weeks.  i cant sleep for more than a few minutes at a time, and get only about 2 hours of sleep a night if im lucky.  my legs kill me and so do my feet.  my adreanal glands arent working right, fibermyalgia is taking away evrything, doctors dont know what to do.  i am on methadone, mirapex, and topamax(for tremors) and lortab for pain.  they dont work well, but they help some.  I am thinking about going to the mayo clinic to try to find a doctor who might know something.  any suggestions would be helpful.
