hyperthyroid symptoms?

by nicobella, Oct 03, 2005 12:00AM
HI. i was diagnosed with graves disease a few months back. i was taking tapazole and a beta blocker for treatment. Since then my levels looked better and were actually even going towars the other end....hypo.soo they took me off all meds. a few more months have passed and i have been feeling very irritated...easily stressed....tired and aggitated. when my levels were more towards hypo i was always tired...colder and have NO energy. it used to feel like a 10 ton weight was on me. to just bend down or get up was grooling and hard.

My question is this...can you become hyper again and not have the all the symptoms. can you be more constipated rather than have diahhrea with hyper---is it possible?? what can i do for the aggitation? thanks

Melissa,

Graves should usually be treated with anti-thyroid drugs (such as tapazole) for 12-18 months -- the important part is to adjust (and generally not stop) the tapazole every 2 months to keep the labs and symptoms controlled.  My guess is that you need to go back on Tapazole at a lower dose and follow closely -- usually every 2 months I check labs and see if I can cut the dose in half.  Alternatively, you could have radioactive iodine to definitively treat the Graves if you are hyper again.  This is a very effective treatment but you must realize that it usually commits you to lifelong thyroid hormone replacement.

I was on tapazole for about 3 months...then they checked my levels and cut my dos into half....then again in half to everyother day. but then my levels went towards borderline hypo so they took me off the tapazole altogether. I had my levels checked today so we shall see.

thanks

When I had hyperthyroidism, my bowel movements were very frequent throughout the day. I also had constipation and diarrhea.

does alcohol play a role in thyroid disease.?? what can the effects be?

alcohol does not have a direct effect on thyroid function in most cases.  Hopefully the repeat thyroid function tests are normal otherwise may need low dose tapazole for 12-18 months to try to achieve a remission
