Diagnosed with Graves disease, now I wonder?

by Duchess47, Nov 17, 2005 12:00AM
I have been all over this website asking about various ailments i have been experiencing for 9 months now.  I was diagnosed with Graves Diseae almost 4 years ago and put on Tapazole.  I came off of it in March of '04 and was able to stay off of it for 5 months or so until my thyroid went up again and so back on the Tapezole.  Lately I have seen several specilaists with varying problems from dry cough, larynghitits, to pain in parts of my body to rapid heart rate and difficulty swollowing, and just general fatigue.  My regular Endo. sent me to see another Endo. to discuss RAI (it is not a procedure that can be done in the hospital I usually go to ).To my surprise he wants me off of the meds., no RAI, and further states that I am in remission and do not need any drugs!!  My regular Endo. says that I can come off the meds. but will check my thyroid in 2 weeks.  I am so confused.  If My thyroid was so out of whack, and I don't have Graves disease what casues the thyroid levels to be so high?

Tough to answer without all the data -- Graves can go into remission(you were on tapazole for about three years or more it seems) -- your symptoms may be thyroid or other -- it does bring up the possibility of thyroiditis -- transient hyperthyroidism from inflammation of the gland (? in response to upper airway disease). in that case it will resolve on its own and you will need to be monitored for hypothyroid.  I agree with your endo to recheck in 2 weeks -- if still hyper then consider doing an I-123 uptake and scan to help sort this out.
