Bleeding and Pelvic Pain After Sex

by crtny, Apr 09, 2007 12:00AM
I'm 24 yrs old about 20 lbs overweight and otherwise healthy.  Starting in October of 06 sexual intercourse began to be painful for me.  I just convinced myself that maybe my husband was just being to rough or maybe I wasn't producing enough lubrication (even though it was no different than anytime before then).  Then in December I started bleeding after sex and I also have pain on my lower left abdomen, both last on average 1-3 days.  I became very concerned after the second time and went to see my general practioner and she did a pelvic exam and said I was fine (I had just had my PAP a few months before and it was normal).  Then after it happened again I went back to my general practioner and she sent me to have a pelvic ultrasound which came back normal.  After happening several more times she changed my birth control pill from a low dose to the regular pill and this helped my overall menstration because the bleeding was ALOT less during my period and my cramps are now almost non-exisistent.  She also put me on Lexapro because she thought maybe the symptoms were stress related.  Well it is April 07 now and each and every time I have sex I bleed and have left sided pain.  I am to the point that I do not want to have sex because I do not look forward to the after effects.  My husband has been SO supportive and seems to understand but I WANT to be able to have sex with my husband! Please help!

If the pap is normal, the cervical cultures are negative, and the ultrasound workup is negative, then you should consider a musculoskelital sourse for the pain. Many women with painful intercourse can have myofascial pain, and may benefit from pelvic floor and abdominal physical therapy, usually done by a qualified pelvic floor physical therapist. Your local urogynecologist should be able to recommend one to you, they are usually female, and work on the ppelvic floor muscles via the vagina.

The bleeding can be from a cervical polyp, or perhaps related to an irregular period.
