PAIN AFTER RECTOCELE SURGERY

I AM 8 WEEKS POST-OP RECTOCELE SURGERY.  MY DOCTOR TOLD ME THAT MY VAGINAL AREA WOULD BE SHORTER AFTER SURGERY, DUE TO WHAT ALL HE DID, AND THAT SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WOULD BE UNCOMFORTABLE.  IT IS MORE THAN UNCOMFORTABLE,IT IS VERY PAINFUL! MY HUSBAND ISN'T EVEN ABLE TO COMPLETELY ENTER ME. iT FEELS LIKE THERE ISN'T ENOUGH ROOM FOR HIM TO BE THERE.  ANY SUGGESTIONS TO HELP US ALONG?  LUBRICATION DOESN'T SEEM TO BE THE PROBLEM!

Pain like yours is not normal after this type of surgery. You should ask your surgeon to evaluate the area and see if perhaps the vaginal opening was mage too tight.

As long as you've had your check-up and all looks good then I'll tell you what my doc told me, work it out.  It will continue to hurt for quite a while.  Try to relax as much as possible, maybe even something to help you relax and dull the pain before hand; such as tylenol or a mixed drink.  It's fairly common to become to tight after surgery.  If it continues to be impossible for him to even penetrate, then you should consult your GI doc or even a 2nd opinion.  As long as you don't have bleeding, signs of infection or pain other than directly in the vaginal area, then try to be patient and explain to your husband that his patience and gentleness will be required in this matter also.  Hope you bounce back soon!

BUSTERSMOMKR, I had an A & P repair, 9 months ago, and feel the same as you, plus, I have major bowel problems. I feel like there is a lot of tissue in there. Are you having any problems moving your bowels?

dlhigh, Gyne referred me to my GI doc, I have an appt. in Aug., but don't really understand how he can help. Can you explain? Thanks.

Thanks for replying to my question.  It's good to talk with someone that has had the same problem.  I have had some problems with my bowels since my surgery.  I now take both stool softeners and fiber daily.  It has helped tremendously!  As far as you feeling like you have extra stuff in bowel area, maybe it is scar tissue.  I think the reason for the GI consult is that they deal strictly with the gastro-intestinal(bowels) system.  They'll be able to check out the bowels, etc. easier, with whatever tests needed to see what is going on.  Good luck!

It seems like my problem gets worse with either constipation, or diarrhea. It feels as though everything has come down and settled. So, I hope my G.I. doc will have a better idea when he sees the CT scan report. He didn't have a clue in March, when he did the sigmoidoscopy. However the problem has developed more symptoms since then.

Bowel problems can stem from waiting too long to correct the rectocele, but OB doc is making the right call referring you to the GI due to the major bowel problems you indicated.  Tests may need to be done to rule out major concerns or determine medication to help with your bowels.  There is also the possibility of scar tissue removal , you could ask your OB doc about!   Good luck on the road to good health.

I wrote to a Gyne at University of Chicago Hospital, last weekend, that has a clinical interest in prolapse. I felt that she might have an idea of any problems associated with A & P repair. I gave her the details and she replied that it sounded like a muscle or a nerve and invited me to make an appt to see her. I saw her this past Wednesday, and she examined me, took a history and ordered a defography. I am scheduled for the defography on Monday, and believe me, I am dreading it. But, I am very hopeful that it will reveal the problem. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

could you tell me the name of the dr. @ U of C? My Mom is having similar problems. She had the defography and it showed rectocele but her dr. won't operate.I want her to get a 2nd opinion. Thank you.
