Calcification of a 2.7 cm cyst with my right kidney

by Lan sky, May 31, 2007 12:00AM
I had blood (trace or 1+) with my urine for the last 3 years. CT test on May 22nd, 2007. The findings:The initial cross sections without IV contrast do demonstrate some calcifications of the lower mid portion of the right renal cortex in association with an area of mass effect. No other significant calcifications are seen over the urinary tract. Following the administration of IV contrast material without significant patient or action, there is prompt bilateral excretion and initial and lateral films document an approximately 2.7 cm low density lesion of the right kidney that shows a density of less than 9 Hounsfield units, arguing for a fluid content; although, the presence of some associated calcifications on the precontrast study always is of concern. CT took in 2003 for chest pain found the visualized organs in the upper abdomen demonstrates tiny bilateral renal cysts. My questions: Is there any possibility to have cancer for my right kidney? The urologist said there is 25% possibility for cancer due to this peripheral caicifications, but other doctors do not think in the same way. I am going to take a renal ultrasound on June 1. I am going to also get the CT which was taken in 2003. I am not sure if it is the same cyst or not. I had the cystoscope and they found some pollen and perhaps blood was from there. I got mixed comments about this problem. What should I do now? I have to travel abroad from June 2 and come back on July 17th. Thanks.

Blood in the urine with these findings is certainly worrisome.

Reg your question 'is there any possibility---------' : I can only say that it cannot be ruled out, with what you have just described. If this cyst and calcification have stayed the same since 2003 then one may/ may not choose to observe/ closely follow up.

Rarely other conditions eg. tuberculosis or other masses, granulomas etc of the kidney could give a somewhat similar picture- how old are you, do you have any fevers, any other problem, any relevant family history, or are you from a place where the prevalence of tb is higher etc.

In any case you should follow this up with your urologist.
