Should I be worried?

I'm just wondering whether I should be concerned about my dad having a recurrenace. My dad is 64 and was diagnosed with kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma) this past November. He had a laproscopic radical nephrectomy of the one kidney. According to doc, it was localized, no spreading to lymph nodes or other areas. It was localized inside the kidney as well. Best result you could ask for. Just routine 6 month check up's etc. Anyway, he has been being monitored, blood tests, all that. He had a cyst on his other kidney but the doctors said it was ok. So he goes for recent tests. Gets chest CT. Now they want him to go for an MRI of abdomen and pelvis. Apparently the 1cm cyst grew to 1.8 in the last month or so. Cause for concern? Also, they saw mass on thyroid that radiologist says may be indicative of goiter. But the report recommends a follow up sono, but for some reason, the doctor did not order one. The doc that ordered the MRI is also a covering doc b/c my dad's regular doc is away on vacation. I dont want to overreact but being that there is a cyst on his kidney that is now growing and this mass on his thyroid? Any input is appreciated...

There could be many reasons for change in the size of a cyst- comparison of sizes measured using 2 different modalities can reflect differences in measurement (eg a 14 mm cyst being read as 12 mm on one modality and as 16 mm on the other); sonography is operator dependent; size on CT can be dependent on where the MRI/CT-slice imaged the cyst......., and so on.

Simple kidney cysts are common with increasing age. The features of the cyst need to be taken into consideration. If the features are suggestive of a simple cyst, your father will only require the regular post-radical-nephrectomy followup that is required for the RCC of the opposite kidney.

The thyroid mass will need to be evaluated by the appropriate specialist. It may or may not be related to the primary problem
