Accutane-scar question

by Jose, Oct 16, 1999 12:00AM
Hello my name is Jose and i have had acne in the face, back, and buttocks for the past 6 years im 20 right now. After having tried everything over the counter, every single prescribed topical, and all sorts of antibiotics, i have deduced that my acne is very persistent. But it is mild, not very mild but still mild enough for a dermatologist to refuse giving me accutane. So after having taken minocycline 150mg a day along with benzamycin twice a day (which worked at first but then came back after a year)my doctor has reluctantly decided to put me an accutane (Thank God). Doc i have two questions one is, do you think accutane was my last resort after having tried everything and will it help me? And number two is that i have never had any pitted scarring (because i never had cysts)only the red scarring after a pimple is there, but it always goes away. Well, maybe its because im paying more close attention to this but now after a pimple has gone away i notice that the red area is lower than the rest of the skin (it looks like a scar, not deep though). But then after like 4 weeks the red mark has faded a bit and the skin is back to normal (equally layered, no pitted scar). Is this normal ive heard that it takes the skin 28 days or so to replace dead skin cells. But ive never notied this b4. What im worried about, is now that ill be on accutane, will i keep the pitted scars? Doesnt accutane stop or slow down skin healing? Im worried that now due to the accutane my scars that once used to go away will now linger for awhile. Sorry for the lettet being so long but im really worried. When i asked my doctor he just said "dont worry about it" it may take longer to heal but it will still heal.

Jose:

Your questions are good, but your doctor is right.  The Accutane will almost certainly help you, and it will not interfere with the healing of the redness.  (I think you're correct --  you're looking more closely than you used to.)  If other treamtnets fail Accutane is quite a reasonable and safe alternative, particularly in men.

I'm confident you'll do fine.  Don't worry!

Best.
