Question Title: post op gallbladder surgery problem

Forum: The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum
Topic: Gallbladders

I had my gallbladder removed on July l0,1998. I am often experiencing some kind of back up feeling when I lay down at night. Most of the time it is relieved by taking over the counter meds such as zantac etc.
I would like to know if this is common, and is there a way to avoid this happening by changing my diet?
I also have Crohn's and an ileostomy.
Thanks in advance.

Dear susan,
the symptom of regurgitation is exceedingly common and is not a complication of the gall bladder surgery. Often the problem is related to reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. There are several lifestyle modifications that should improve your symptoms:
a) eat 3 meals, no snacks
b) do not lie down for 4 hour after eating
c) sleep with the head of your bed elevated approximately 6 inches
d) avoid chocolate, peppermints, coffee, tea and fatty foods
e) do not smoke
f) do not drink alcohol

I would also continue the over-the-counter zantac, if this medication helps. You should see aphysician if you meet any of the following conditions:
a) symptoms persist despite conservative therapy,
b) symptoms worsen
c) weight loss or change in appetite is noted
d) food sticks in the esophagus when swallowed
e) you vomit blood
f) you develop asthma
