Question Title: Rat poison effects?

Forum: The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum
Topic: Gastroenterology - General

Hello. I am sorry to have to post this here on your forum as this question does not relate to humans.

My 4 year old, spayed, female Beagle (35 lbs) that is my dearest friend ate something on the weekend the vet says could have been rat poison. But they aren't sure. They induced vomiting, did a blood test, gave her charcoal, and vitamin K in oil.

My question is.......do you know at all if there are any side effects of taking vitamin K for 2 weeks (1 cc/day for 7 days then 1/2 cc/day for 7 days) if it wasn't poison?

I have asked the vet...but no one is giving me any information....

Debbie

Dear Debbie,

Oral vitamin K is well tolerated in humans and toxicity has not been reported with oral preparations. On the other hand, parenteral (intravenous or intramuscular) vitamin K has been associated with flushing sensation, dizziness, rapid and weak pulse, sweating, low blood pressure, shortness of breath and bluish appearing skin. Even these reactions are rarely reported. Allergic or hypersensitivity reactions can also occur with parenteral vitamin K administration. I cannot tell you whether or not this data can be extrapolated to beagles, but I can only speculate that this may be the case since your veterinarian prescribed the medicine for your beagle. Good luck to you.
