Question Title: After surgery complicationsForum: The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum

My mother had Laparoscopic gall bladder surgery in January. This past week, she is having the same type of pain she had before the surgery. Could this be complications from the surgery? Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Jim __ Dear Jim Endrud, I doubt that your mother’s pains represent a complication of the laparoscopic cholecystectomy. As has been written in this Forum on several occasions: if the gall bladder is removed because of atypical abdominal pains, the pains will often recur. If your mother has jaundice or fever, it is possible that she has common bile duct stones. In the absence of these symptoms, it would be necessary to look for causes in the stomach, small intestine and colon. The specific sequence of tests would depend on the nature of her pains and any other associated symptoms. This response is offered for your general information and should not replace the conclusions drawn from a careful and complete evaluation by your physician. If you want, we would be happy to see you in the Division of Gastroenterology at Henry Ford Hospital and perform the appropriate investigations after we have had the chance to meet you and to review your history in greater detail. You can arrange an appointment with Dr. Fogel, one of our experts in the diagnosis and treatment of abdominal pain, by calling the Henry Ford Physician Referral Line at (800)653-6568.
