Subject: Re: Gastric Diverculi
Forum: The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Forum

I'm a 39 year old female and a recent UGI showed that I had a gastric diverculi. The doctor said it was probably congenital and nothing to worry about. I had an UGI 16 years ago and was not told that I had one. I can not find any information about this. I had the UGI because of abdominal pain, weight loss, feeling full after eating a small amount, and belching after meals. A small ulcer was also found. I am just taking 150mg of Zantac at night. I'm still having some of the same symptoms but to a lesser degree. A BE was normal.
Any information is appreciated. Thanks

Dear Chris:
Thank you for your question on gastric diverticuli. The clinical significance of a gastric diverticulum is controversial. There are reports of diverticuli causing ulcer-like pain or vomiting, however, the vast majority of the patients have no symptoms. It would be helpful to know the size of your gastric diverticulum since larger diverticuli are more often associated with inflammation and symptoms. Lastly, you symptoms could be related to the small ulcer seen on UGI series. It would be important to know whether or not this was a stomach or duodenal ulcer. We know recognize that the majority of ulcers are caused by a organism known at H. pylori. For persistent symptoms despite the use of Zantac I would also consider an upper endoscopy for further clarification of both gastric diverticulum and suspected ulcer.
