I have had mild to moderate pain just below my ribs on the right side for several months. It has on rare occasions been very sharp and stabbing for just seconds and sometimes burning, but mostly just an annoying ache that is there daily. At a recent doctor's visit, I was scheduled for a gallbladder ultrasound. Since I have also had some problems with reflux, the doctor changed my meds from zantac to prevacid. He said it was possible that the problem was due to reflux. Well, I had my doubts because I thought the reflux actually seemed better and I was not taking as much zantac as I used to. My ultrasound came back normal and since taking the prevacid, my symptoms have gotten much better. Could this pain on the right side be caused from reflux only? The doc's office called, wanted to know how I was feeling, and said there was another gall bladder test they might want to do. If the ultrasound was normal, why do another test. Is prevacid a long term drug or only for short periods of time? Thank you for your response!

Dear Cheryl,
Abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant can result from a number of different conditions. The relief with prevacid may indicate that acid was causing your symptoms-reflux esophagitis and gastritis arer possible explanations. In the absence of gallstones, additional tyests of the gall bladder are usually not done.
