Laxatives -- How Long Should We Use

by Nomo, Jun 06, 2001 12:00AM
My child has just been diagnosed with a motility dysfunction in his colon.  His colon does not push through stool and therefore we have him on laxatives to keep the stool soft in order to control further distention, swelling, etc.  Every three days he is then able to evacuate himself, although his stool is in the form of liquid diarhea.  How long can we use laxatives without further complicated his proble.  Can the use of laxatives harm anyy other area of his sytem (i.e., rectum, small bowel)?  Clearly we would want to stay this route as long as possible to avoid any surgery but only if we are not creating a bigger problem in the future.

I firmly believe that you should see a specialist for this if you haven't.  I used to have problems going to the bathroom and for that I would take a laxative. Well I am now 38 yrs. old and last year I had to have all but 8inches of my colon removed. The doctor says alot of it because I took laxatives so much. They made me loose all the elasisity(spelling?) in my colon.  Good luck hope they don't have to go what I went through- it's a horrible surgery and very long recovery, not to mention the expense.  I'd say seek a specialist.
