Crohn's vs Ulcerative Colitis vs Behcet's Syndrome

by mercurygirl31, Aug 19, 2001 12:00AM
I have been having quite the year, going to doc after doc to help me with a diagnosis.  It all started with severe bloody diarrhea, severe cramping, weight loss (20 pounds), joint pain.  I had a flex sig. that said ulcerative colitis.  I had a colonoscopy that said Crohn's.  I went to a GI specialist at a major facility that told me it was probably Behcet's.  The rhuematologist at the same facility said, oh no, it's Ulcerative Colitis.  All biopsies have came back ulcerative colitis.  After spending a month in the hospital on high dose steroids and IV's, I did seem to come around a bit. I'm currently taking Prednisone 10 mg/day and Asacol 3200 mg/day.

However, now, six months later, I am having awful vomiting (two weeks now), horrible epigastric pain, chills, fevers, and diarrhea.  I went to the ER and the only value extremely elevated was my lipase levels.  (I don't know what that pertains to.) I never had the vomiting before with the previous illness.

My question to anyone who will answer is: Does this sound familiar to anyone?  How do you treat a disease when no one can give you the same diagnosis?  Any suggestions?

Hi ... sorry I'm not a doctor, but I've read quite a bit on Crohn's disease and Colitis over the years in trying to figure out my own health problems. All I can tell you is that every symptom you've described is something I've heard of in association with Crohn's disease. Especially the onset, and the improvement on steroids. Your new symptoms could be a flare-up (the swelling from Crohn's can cause partial obstruction, leading to the vomiting, etc.), and I know fever can be related to it is well. The lipase levels I couldn't comment on, but the rest sounds like pretty straight-ahead Crohn's to me.

Best wishes and hope you feel better soon.
