recurrent liver cancer after transplant

by skippo, Sep 30, 2001 12:00AM
i recieved a new liver in dec 2000.my old liver showed a6.5cm tumor in pathology.no evidence of cancer elswhere in body.6 month ct showed no tumor growth.last ct-9month-shows 2 possible tumors{awaiting biopsiy].advised that pathology result on tumor in old liver showed some invasion of blood vessel in the liver. if these images prove to be cancer what can i do-expect. i have been veryhard pressed to remaine sane with the not knowing for this past week.i have a beautifull 5yr old daughter who finally got to have a dad to love who could do things with her, and for that i am forever thankfull, but i would sure like for her to have some more of that! i have resd how not good the prognosis is if this is indeed a recurrent fom of cancer.my Dr. explained that if they are tumors[not fatty liver]they will probably use chemoembolilization and possibly systemic chemo after. i have been reading a lot about radiofrequency ablation and think it may be an option i would choose.my questions are-is there anything out there tha might better my odds of being around any longer?is there anyone out there who has the same problem with any ideas?is there a Dr. out there who is trying something new?

        thanks

Hello Skippo.

You may wish to contact the American Liver Foundation, or the Canadian Liver Foundation...depending on where you live...these site are easily accessed on the net. They may be able to provide you with other alternatives to the questions you are asking.

All the best to you and your family.

Hello

My husband has mets to his liver from a undefined primary

cancer.   His tumor is 6 cm in size.

We tried systemic chemo for 5 months with no positive

results.  The tumor has not grown but neither did it shrink.

We are now undergoing Direct Infusion through the hepatic

artery to the tumor and his tumor marker came down for the

first time, it dropped 151 pts after the first direct infusion

He just finished his second treatment and the Onc. said with

the tumor marker dropping this much he did not see how the

tumor could have helped but shrunk.

We go back Jan. 4th for CT scans to see how much.

If we get the 6 cm tumor down to 2 cm.  they can do

Radio Frequency Ablation.   So that is what we are aiming at.
