Abdominal pain

by jim007, Nov 14, 2001 12:00AM
I had a party about 2.5 weeks ago where I consumed a large quantity of alcohol.  I haven't had any alcohol since.  But, for the past 2.5 weeks I felt uneasiness/pain in the upper part of my abdomen and sometimes on my right side. I thought than at this time the pain, if due to alcohol, would be gone, but I still feel the pain when I eat moderately unfatty foods (eg. carbohydrates like rice or bread) and/or drink coffee (2 cups) in the morning.  I also feel that my abdomen is somewhat swollen.  I checked the net about my condition to find out what the problem might be.  I sometimes feel a little dizzy, have a low-level fever, etc.  I have good appetite though. I am presuming I possibly may have an inflammation of the liver ("alcoholic hepatitis") and/or a "fatty" or enlarged liver.  Am I right?  Also, I am very concerned for the pain to persist and further problems developing.  Will the pain be gone any day soon?  Should I be concerned?  What is the best treatment (diet, medication), if any, for this problem?

I think you could probably benefit from a Gallbladder scan and a blood test to check your liver enzymes.  I'm sure you'll be fine and watch drinking any more alcohol and stay away from Advil, Motrin or Ibupofen products which can make matter worse.

Thank you, Jarbet, for your advice.  Did you ever have such symptoms?  I am not touching any medication at this point.  I only have had aspirin (1-2) per day.  Is that OK?

Thank you, Jarbet, for your comment and advice.  Did you ever have similar symptoms yourself?  I am not taking any medication.  I only have had 1-2 aspirins per day.  Is that OK?

No, I have never had any problems like this myself (knock on wood), but have been in the medical field for several years and have picked up a few things.  Often gallbladder problems can be silent and with the drinking binge..you could have set it off.  Also, not only does alcohol bother the liver that produces the bile, but sugar does too. You mentioned that you are trying to stay away from fatty foods and this is good, but the carbohydrates that you are eating turn into sugar. I would try eating more protien and alot of the green leafy veggies and drink lots of water to help flush your system.  If you continue to have pain, please don't wait long before seeking some medical advise that could help clear your problem right up.  Good luck.

my son 10 yrs old had stomach or abdominal pains for several days, we thought it might have been something he ate. the pain got worst se we took him to the er. we were told that it was a stomach virus. we took him home and the pains were more so worst. again we took him to the er where the dr. pressed his abdominal area it was soft she asked if he moved his bowels which he did that morning at 5.am. no more after that before i returned to the er i had given him maalox. at the er he was given another dose of maalox.x-rays were taken inflamation was found, blood tests were taken results were that he had gastritis, viral gastritis. he finally moved his bowels the next day which was liquidy green, he felt better..all he was eating was crackers, gingerale.very little of anything no milk. he felt alot better.and the pain would come back and then go. this morning we figured since it was two days of liquids and light eating that he could eat a good breakfast he did and he was fine until he ate chicken and mashed potatoes. then the pain came back. was it too early to start heavy food? and is he too young to be having this gastritis. or could he just be constipated? i just need to know what i could do for him. thank you
