HELP - I cant take this anymore!

by TonyIreland, Nov 25, 2001 12:00AM
Hi im 25 years old and want your advice to help me get my life back.

3 Years ago i was in Poland, and 2 to 3 days into the holiday i started to get very dizzy and stomach cramps - i couldnt eat, sleep, - it scared the life out of me. I thought it might have been the drink but soon i discovered that this was not the case:

* After visiting the doctor i was put on antacids - didnt work.

* Told i may have a tumour - scared the life out of me!

* Waited 3 months to get into hospital for endoscopy - no tumour - thank you Doc for scaring the hell out of me.

* Biopsy results indicated Helicobectar Pylori.

* Took the strongest 2 weeks antibiodics for eradication - still no good.

* 8 months or so into all this, i started to get depressed - Aha now the Doc had an excuse - they said depression was causing the stomach upsets - I disagreed - i said all this annoyance and pain has caused the depression.

* Took the anti-depressants and still on them. Stomach is still the same. I lost faith in doctors and I have never went back to the Doc, but i want to now because i am really fed up and its destroying me.

* I havent a clue whats wrong and i want to know so then i can do something about it.

My Symptoms:

- Trapped Wind

- Dizzy Like feeling - More so in morning times

- Sometimes Diarrohea

- A general uncomfortable feeling in my stomach - not pain - just very upsetting.

- Tired - especially in the morning with the dizzy like feeling

Im scared, honestly, really scared - please help.

I am a 33.  The last time I was out of the country was Italy in 1995.

I have been struggling with all of your symptoms plus a few more for the last year.  I have checked myself into emergency a half a dozen times thinking that I was going to die.  I also have trouble breathing at times and can feel a irregular heart beat.

I have had a MRI, CAT Scan, Ultrasound, treadmill stress test, blood tests.  Everything comes up normal.  Up until I was 32 I was always very healthy and avoided seeing doctors.

As with yours, the doctors I have seen bring up depression as well.  Well Gosh with these symptoms most people would be depressed.

It started out with the doctor giving me Prevacid to prevent stomach acid.  This was supposed to fix any ulcers that I may have.  I was complaining about stomach pain, nausea, and more diarrheas.  After 2 months of taking Prevacid I saw a ad in a magazine for Prevacid while I was in the Endoscopy specialist's waiting room.  Turns out that my Doctor failed to notice 3 of my symptoms were the side effects related to Prevacid.

I quit taking the Prevacid and everything else for that matter, and chose not to do the Endoscopy...Yet.  I watch what I eat and make sure that I sleep enough but it doesn't seam to help that much.  I have little episodes (as I call them) a few times a week.

---

I am not sure what the next step is.  I should go back to the doctor but I don't have much faith in him either.  Not after he missed the Prevacid side effects.

If I ever figure anything out I will post it here.

Damn. Sounds a whole lot like my "episodes". I've had some strange problems in my upper gut and chest. Went to the ER one night. Had a bunch of tests that night and the following 6 weeks. Lost 30+ lbs. Had my gallbladder removed. Got diagnosed with Pylori & took the anti-biotics. Been on and off of Prevacid & Nexium (PPIs), Donnatol and other anti-spasmotics, and a pyscoactive drug.

Doctors act as if I make my symptoms up, but I can assure you, they're real.

I'm VERY frustrated. Symptomatic treatments, 4-6 week waits to get tests that in the end turn up no new evidence, 10-15 day waits for follow up appointments. I've missed enough work that i won't get another (paid) vacation day until the year 2248. :-(

Well, I'm not a doctor, but maybe it's a slight (very slight) comfort that you're not alone.

Hang in there,

Ric
