My 6 year old white son fractured his skull at school. After surgery, his spleen was found to be enlarged. There is a family history of splenomegaly after high strees or trauma. His platelett count ranges from 28,000 to 58,000 rapidly. We have had him to Danville Childrens hospital but the hemotology/ oncology group there has no clue. The bone marrow results were fine, the liver function test were fine, the blood test were fine. The IG group tells me he must have a scared liver that is putting back pressure on the portal vein and that a shunt must be installed running between his portal vein and kidneys. Thus, reducing the pressure and reduce spleen size. I requested a vascular ultrasound and blood flow was in correct direction and more than adaquite. I am of eastern european decant and my wife of Irish/english decent. Our son has been tested for Gauch disease as well as Tay-Sachs and is negativee. He is not lathargic but he is pale. His red count is low normal range. He coompalins of abdominal pain, basically his spleen is placing pressure on his stomach.

Spherocytosis causes sphere shaped blood cells which causes the spleen to overwork to break them down, which leads to the spleen enlarging.
