Varicella-Zoster and atonic bowel/illeus

by Maryjane, Mar 14, 2002 12:00AM
Patient presented with pain and vesicular rash down sciatic nerve area.  In addition, distribution of rash spread toward mid thigh, perineum, and up groin area of affected leg. She has not had a bowel movement in 7 days and is retaining enemas.  Stimulant laxatives are not working.  I cannot examine her for bowel sounds, etc (not in same city). Could constipation/bowel problem (paralysis?)be related to zoster infection of nerves innervating lower bowel?  Have you heard of this?
