Any relation between Endo § GERD?

by mbitzp, Mar 18, 2002 12:00AM
I was diagnosed with GERD last year and was doing fairly well on Protonix until the last few months.  FYI, I am set for a TAH/BSO in mid-April for severe endometriosis.  The endo must have really progressed during the last 6-8 months because I am in fairly consistent moderate pain on any given day, with horrible days mixed in-between.

Recently, I have been experiencing frequent burning in the chest, throat, and mouth (sometimes even my nose) and then, I experience heavy nasal drainage down the throat.   I was seen last week by an ENT who told me he thought this was GERD!   Off to an internal medicine physician (could get in quickly, I was miserable) and I am now taking Protonix and 2-3 Pepcid AC per day and my symptoms are improving. (Set to see gastroenterologist later in the month.) Additionally, experience frequent nausea and gastrointestinal distress.

Could the recent GERD problems be correlated to the progression of endo?   Is it reasonable for me to think that post-surgery, I may have relief from nausea, gastrointestinal distress and GERD symptoms?  Some sharp pain pulling pain around my belly button too.  What could cause that?

Hi. I read your post with great interest. I have had rectal bleeding on and off for about 3 years. I also developed GERD around the same time. I had gone to the GI doc several times and have had several tests done and he could never find a cause for the bleeding. I recently went to my GYN after doing some research on endo and she agrees that I may indeed have endo of the bowel. I am on a BC pill and I have to track my symptoms every month until I see her again in May. I have not officially been diagnosed with endo because my Doc would have to do surgery to see for sure but both problems started at exactly the same time and both my GERD and rectal bleeding are most severe about 1 week before my period starts. I also have severe bloating that is so bad I cannot even fit into my loose jeans. The pill is supposed to help with that symtom at least. I have always thought it odd that both problems started at the same time but I was always told that they were unrelated. I am sorry that I have nothing concrete to offer you but I thought it may help to know that someone else has a similar situation. I hope you find all the answers that you are looking for and that you get relief from any pain soon. God bless!

Feelbetter: Thanks for the response.  I expected to have occurences of gastrointestnal problems about 5 days prior to a menstrual cycle.  Then the endo got worse and so did the other. Sounds like we may have some link here.  Hope to hear from others too!  Hope you are able to resolve your problems soon.  May seems so far away when your speaking in terms of feeling better!

I too suffer with constant abdominal aches and pains in my stomach, above the belly button. Do you have trouble with eating ?

I have lost alot of weight and now using Choice to help with nutrients.

What has helped?

The nexium and zantac did nothing nor Tums.

Now suggested to try Aciphex and a pain reliever, But I teach and don't want to be on meds like that.

Co-worker has suggested Accupuncture and or hollistic approach with Vitamins.

Hope I read more well informed posts here.

just to let you know a fah/tah does not mean you will not have endo or that the pain will stop.....trust me my sister and I both had tah at about 23yrs old....still in pain from endo....ask your dr about hormone therepy to stop the endo from growing or flaring....of course it is nice not bleeding anymore....ok it's great not bleeding...still   make sure you are done haveing kids...I wish I could of had 1 more...plus getting pregnant stops the endo for awhile at least 9 months....the reason they do a tah is so that you take horemones and that "stops the endo"  they are full of it...if you do have it done you might want to try estrodal or estrotab...basically the same thing. they work alot better than premern besides premerin is horse urine that is extracted from pregnant horses ...just food for thought
