Likely too yes. High AST & ALT and high iron studies are indicative of haemachromatosis. If this is the case then the treatment is actually management of the condition. Venesections or taking blood off at regular intervals will reduce then maintain iron levels at an acceptable level. If haemachromatosis is diagnosed then the sooner this is done the better. Once levels are down no further damage to the liver will or should occur. Only real way to check for liver damage is through biopsy but will confirm. Elevated LFT's will undoubtably lead to irriversible liver damge/cihrosis. If liver damage present then there is chance that there is increase presure on the blood flow through the liver. This may lead to varicies in the aosophagus so your gastroenterologist ought to recommend gastroscopy to check this out. Failure to identify this has the potential for problems should varicies rupture. If cihrosis is diagnosed then 6 monthly ultrs sound is recommended plus 3 monthly alphafetoprotein test to be on watch for early signs of tumor. Hope this hasn't frightened you. I know whats its about - I have got it and done it. By the way if is haemachromatosis it may be genetic and therefore will need to get family checked. It i snot as rare as people may think. Good luck - R
