I've been taking Prevacid 30mg twice a day for several years for what was diagnosed as GERD. A new family practice MD and my pharmacist is questioning my long-term use and dosage of Prevacid. I've tried to decrease to 30mg once a day, but had severe heartburn. The new MD suggested an endoscopy. Does that sound like a reasonable place to start in order to get some medical answers? I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Hi Cindy,welcome.

My gastro doc. perscribed Nexium (a ppi just like prevacid) after my endoscopy for "irritation" .  I recently took myself off it because of the severe side effects of PPI's that I have read on this forum.

After "surviving" a lathroscopic gallbladder removal and going through 5 mos. of pain afterwards I finally took myself off the Nexium. I am happy to say, I have had NO pain as of Thursday, it's now Sunday.(stopped last Monday)

Before this, I was feeling pretty bad.  Yes, you should have the endoscopy but make sure that you have a good Dr. that is not going to put you on Meds and forget about you like mine did.  You should see someone who will keep a close eye on your symptoms and listen to you!  Good luck..

I can only say that I had an endoscopy, and it was a pretty simple procedure.  I had been having mild stomach discomfort, bloating, some burning, burping, etc.  The actual procedure took about 25 minutes from start to finish, and I was out and did not feel or remember anything.  I don't know what your symptoms are, but I turned out to have a small polyp in my duodenum, which I then had removed at a later date via ERCP.    I wasn't so worried about the actual procedure, but the anasthesia, which was not a problem.  Generally they put you out for the procedure, and then once you wake up, observe you for an hour or so, and then let you go home.  The only thing I couldn't do was drive home, but other than being a little sleepy I was fine.  I was able to eat within a couple hours after having it done.  Good luck!

Yes, have the endoscopy. It sounds like you have a good MD.

I had an endoscopy for GERD. I am taking Nexium. The endoscopy will also tell if you have Barretts esophagus. If you find it hard to swallow I would suggest an endoscopy.
