Hi,

I have had a ton of experience with benign liver tumors.  My first diagnosis was in 1997, while having a ultrasound for another problem.  The treatment was to watch the lesions for growth.  I had every liver test you could imaging and was told a bunch of different diagnosis' from hemangeoma to adenoma, to focal nodular hyperplasia.  My specialist decided that it was the latter and I was told that birth control pills contributed to the growth of these tumours and was advised to stop taking the pill.  We watched these growths over a period of almost 3 years and then decided that surgery was the best option due to the increase in size.

In January 2001, I underwent liver resection surgery resulting in the surgeon taking half of my liver and my gallbladder (apparently it was in the way).  Since the surgery, I have felt horrible.  The pain was almost unbearable for the first 6 months.  Then I felt okay for the most part until about 4 months ago.  I have been having a burning sensation, more like an ache in my right side under my rib.  I was told this was probably reflux from the surgery, and have been taking prescription zantac for the last 3 months.  The pain seems to be a bit better.  It is really hard to explain.  It is not a sharp pain, nor a real burning, but more an ache, even when sneezing, coughing etc.  The only thing that I know that makes it worse is when I indulge with alcohol.  I am not a heavy drinker, but when I do have some, the next couple of days my stomach (or the pain in the right side) kills me.

I decided that I couldn't deal with this anymore, so last week I went to a walk in clinic.  The dr on call sent me for an ultrasound again.  He just called tonight and said that I have cysts on my liver once again.  He is not the specialist who treated me prior, so he couldn't tell me if it was the same kind.  Now I have to go back to the specialist.  I am scared out of my wits!  I can't go through another surgery like the last one.  If these things are or were caused by the birth control pill, I cannot understand how or why they are back???!!!!

Has anyone had any experience with liver resection or these types of growths?  Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks.
