Anyone have to have Nissen Fundoplication TIGHTENED???

My surgeon is questioning the possibility that the Nissen Fundoplication wrap I received is too loose.  I still have reflux and throat problems.  Has anyone ever had the surgery?  How did it help you?  Has anyone ever had to have it tightened after the initial surgery?  I am very hesitant to that idea, but I can't stand this suffering anymore either.  Any help is welcome.   Thank you all!

hello, yes i did have this surgery it isnt as easy as just tighting it they actually have to go in and re-do te surgery. Im getting it done next week for the third time, not a fun experience, however i just learned something that not many surgeons check unless theyre like experts. Chances are if your wrap loosened like mine it slipped then u have worse reflux then u did in the first place however its just harder for it to travel up into your mouth. I wouldnt want u to make te same mistake i did ask your surgeon if at all possible if your esophugus may be too short, I have an expert how is doinng mine in Boston and he is reconstructing my esophugus this way it cant loosen again. mAKE Sure u ask cuz each time they go in the risks get larger now that i finally got a doctor who knows what he's talking about i have to be sliced from my diaphram to my bellybotton 2 holes on each side on my ribcage and maybe if needed a slice from the back to the front to use some of my small bowel becuase my stomach tissue may be too damaged. So before u go in and let them re-do it check with them and try to have them find out why it slipped and what is different and why wont the re-do loosen, basic questions like that will save u from what ive gone through. As for the re-do itself its pretty much like the first one, same discomfort, an increase in gas when u first wake up a bit of a hard time breathing, but its not that bad. Now this third one isnt supposed to be too good i need an epideral in my spine for pain plus iv pain meds but i had that for the second 2, but it takes a month and a half to recover so please dont make the same mistakes i did, and also dont wait if they say u need the surgery and u ask all the right questions get it done asap i waited too long and there is way too much damage in my stomach that cant be repaired EVER, and nowi  have a chance of that damage turningf into cancer at any point, the surgery will prevent furthur damage and u want to have as little as possible so please dont wait too long and diliberate chaces are if the doc wants to do a re-do u need it.

Thanks for telling me about what you are going through.  It's nice to know I'm not alone.  You sound like you are in worse shape than me; I will pray for you.

I almost died in January, and I have been half miserable since the end of November.  I just want my life back or at least something closer to it.  I have good days, but the bad days only confuse the doctors and nobody has a clue what to do and they just wait and wait and then send me to a new doctor, and it's like no one has any clue how much I'm suffering.  I don't feel much heatburn anymore, but I have continuing throat problems like a raw feeling and I'm constantly clearing my throat, which eventually makes it hurt.  I also have been having breathing problems but doctors have ruled out asthma; so I'm undergoing more tests.

Have you ever heard of breathing problems from reflux or from this surgery???

I had the surgery done in Dec of 2001, I have not experienced any reflux problems, but I am dealing with constant dumping sydrome (diarreha) severe cramping, within 30 minutes of eating I am on the toilet and usually 8 to 10 times per day.  It does come and go, I have had a colonoscopy to rule out colon cancer and all is normal, not sure what is happening to me, I used to think this was the best thing I had ever done now I am having second thoughts.

Glad to hear someone else's nissan worked. I too am having alot of other problems, but I contribute mine to the loss of my spleen and the staph infection that ate through my gastro-tract. Thank-God that your reflux was fixed. Sometimes it doesn't work and they have to re-do it. Just stick with your doctors till they cure the other problems.

Good luck to you both.  It's tough without the right doctor and getting thrown from specialist to specialist.  I don't feel reflux, but something is causing me to constantly clear my throat.  They just found a polyp in my left maxillary sinus; so I'll find out Tuesday what's up with that.  Can it be 2003 yet, please???!!!!???

I had the operation 12 months ago.  I had it done twice as it wasn't sucessful.  In light of comments made, I had complications with my throat.  I went off to en ENT surgoen who told me that I had a constricted pharyngeous muscle.  However, befor that I had excrutiating pain in my throat.  The gastroenterologist felt it was some kind of neuropathic pain.  Not satisfied with this, I wne toff to a GP and was given tablets to treat thrush in the throat.  Apparently, this can result due to lower immunity within the body.  Yhis occurred just following my op.  My throat impotved with the treatment, however I still feel soome pain/ tightness in the throat, however this usually tkes in turn with chronic disconfort in the lower abdomen constantly.  I am wandering if this could be related to internal pressure within.  I make the analogy from the Chinese, a tea pot is unable to pour smoothly when there is no opening at the top.  I wander if because the cardiac sphincter is so tight (I had a full 360 wrap following a three quarter wrap uncucessful) that it impact of the movement of digestion lower down.  Anayway, nice to hook up to some others who are going through similar experiences.  I guess the other concern I have is that I experience this dicomfort daily, and all day, and I just wander what the effects of this may be, however being optimistic.
