my daughter was born with spina bifida in her lower lumbar 4 and 5 she has sensation to go to the bathroom.  Her problem has been chronic diarrea since birth.  It is green in color and she must go 15 times a day.  She does not have colic.  She was switched to a soy formula thinking it was the milk.  She also has kidney reflux which she is taking septra for but she has only been on that for 2 weeks so it is not causing the diarrhea.

Can anyone give me a direction to look in the doctors are all baffled and are leaning toward a GI series.  Kids with spina bifida usually have constipation problems.

I hope that someone knowledgable about spina bifida answers your good questions.

Have you looked for forums dealing specifically with spina bifida?

Have you tried some "probiotics" such as BIFIDO-BACTERIA (also called BIFIDUS) that are related to Acidophilus? Good health food stores carry Bifidus powders that can be mixed with water, etc., and are appropriate for infants and babies. (Keep "probiotics" refrigerated). Follow label directions.

These beneficial bacteria can help normalize bowel (large intestine/gut) function, when antibiotics &/or other medications have killed off the beneficial bacteria that normally would have lived in the large intestine.

Check with your child's doctor, first, to be sure that there would be no "contra-indication" to giving "probiotics" to your child.
