Abdominal Gas/ Diarrhea

by bobbee, Oct 24, 2002 12:00AM
Age 57 .. About 5 weeks ago I developed the following:

slight, ocassional naseau - considerable gas in the abdomin

diarrhea.

Diagnosed as stomache flu, I was given a basic medication

(small pill) to take twice a day. This seemed to mask some

of the symtoms and the diarrhea changed to thin tubular stools

(brown, mushy, no blood).  If I stop the pills the diarrhea and

internal gas returns.

Started on Diphenoxylateatropine today, scheduled for a barium

(enima) Xray next week.

I presently take 80mg Provacol and 1 asprin a day. I have been

taking these for over 2 years. Switched from 40 mg to 80 mg

last May.

I have also been chewing a pack of Trident gum a day for a few

months, I have just learned that this was not a good idea.

I have been drinking 3 or 4 cups of coffee a day since High

School.

While I am following my Doctors recommendations I was hoping

for more insight into what this might be and if it could be

anything serious ?

Age 22- have had similar symptoms on and off for 2 to 3 years. Seemed to worsen when a) went on low dose contraceptive pill, and b) got full time job in busy, stressful office environment.

Have been told by various friends that it sounds like IBS - or lactose/dairy intolerance.

Haven't consulted GP yet as slightly afraid of outcome.
