ASTHMA/FOOD ALLERGIES OR REFLUX?

Hi. I am so happy I found this site. Hopefully you all can help.

In May 2002 I ate a bad, but good meal (cheese fries, pizza, fried stuff) and went to bed 30 min. later. I woke up 30 min. after going to bed, experiencing "choking" and inability to breath. It was terrifying. Next day I was dignosed with an upper resp. infection. After that didn't go away and I was still having trouble swallowing, I was sent for a pulmonary function test and diagnosed with "reactive airway" because it was irritated. BUT I was also told I might have GERD. I needed to be on 2 inhalers, Pepid AC complete, and Clarinex for 8 months before breathing was back to normal.

In retrospect, I wonder if acid went down the wrong tube and affected my airway, leaving it damaged. It is hard to tell because they found fungus in my apartment and I could've had a bronchiospasm due to that. But I always go back to the food thing, and think that must've been it.

In November 2002 after pigging out on Thanksgiving day leftovers I had a very hard time swallowing and breathing and it was scary and took 2 hrs. just to swallow normally. It was worrysome.

Same thing Jan 6, 2003, but that took 4 hrs. and I had to battle panic too.

My doctor thinkd those were food allergies (nuts), but my gut (bad pun) tells me it is GERD related. I had upper GI and that was fine.

Has anyone experienced this, where the doc. is leaning more towards allergies/asthma and you think it is GERD-related?

Thank you for your time!

I have a GERD story, and originally was misdiagnosed with allergies.  The doctor put me on prednisone a year ago, and it aggrevated my GERD so bad that I almost died from internal bleeding.  Stay educated, my friend, and be sure your doctor is open to your feelings.  My symptoms are still baffling because they are not responding to even 90mg of prevacid, but just be cautious about their diagnoses.

God bless.

Thank you DougPoison for your advice. I am taking this more seriously now and am not putting all my faith in my doctor. Thank you. I hope that you also feel better and find comfort.
