25 weeks pregnant and ultrasound showed 'lesion' on kidney and liver

by betsy9499, May 18, 2006 12:00AM
I am 31 years old and 25 weeks pregnant with my 3 child.  I was having abdominal pain on my right side and the Dr. ordered an ultrasound (the abdominal pain has gone away since).  The ultrasound came back showing what the nurse called a lesion on my kidney and liver.  I have since had a liver panel blood test done and those results came back normal.  I am scheduled for an MRI next.  I am healthy and active with no medical conditions other than a mitral valve prolapse.  I'm not exactly sure what a lesion is at this point and what it could mean.  I am also concerned about risks of the MRI to the baby.  I appreciate your comments.

Difficult to speculate over the internet.  "Lesion" can mean many things - including a cyst, mass, infection etc.  The MRI is the appropriate next step.

The effects of MRI on pregnancy are not known.  Here is a disclaimer from an informed consent form:

"The effects of MRI on pregnant women either the woman or her fetus are NOT KNOWN. No conclusive research has been performed. There are no known ill effects, either immediate or delayed. However, because MRI imaging is so new, my doctors CANNOT EXCLUDE the possibility that there may be short term or long term hazards. In other words, the doctors do not know whether my MRI study could damage me or my baby."

I would discuss your concerns with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

I am not a health professional but just wanted to tell you that I had an experience almost exactly like yours.  I was about 25 wks along and had severe URQ pain that came out of nowhere.  I went to my OB and she thought is was my gallbladder--went in for an u/s and it wasn't my gb and eventually the pain went away and never came back.  The results of my u/s revealed that I had a small hemangioma (sp?) on my liver.  It has never given me any problems and many people find them "by accident" this way.  And, in general, they rarely cause any kind of complications. Perhaps this is what your doctors will find.  Good luck to you.

Hello I read your question and am going through a same thing except the pregnancy. My blood work has came back all normal and I have 2 small lesions on my liver and ruq pain with nausea. I requested the doctor do a afp blood test on me to see if there was cancer present but so far the nurse told me could not give me numbers because the doctor hadnt signed off on it but she said everything was within normal limits so I am hoping that means good. I hope you find the answers you are looking for and good luck with the mri I know it is hard but try not to worry excessively for your babys and childrens sake. Take care and the best of luck to

I received my results back from the Dr. today and I do have a hemangioma on my liver which they say is completely benign and assures me that it is nothing to worry about at this point.  They will want me to have another ultrasound in 6 months to check it out and make sure there are no changes to it.  There was some dilitation in my right kidney, but they assured me that was nothing to worry about either.  Thanks for your comments!
