Broken Neck

My father-in-law broke his neck a few months ago, was lucky enough not to suffer any spinal damage.  He is a full-time farmer and has been house bound pretty much since then, he is due to have his brace removed in the next couple of weeks.  The family is concerned about the bouts of depression he has started suffering.  We understand why he is depressed but don't know how to help him, he is withdrawing himself from family and visitors.  We are worried this will continue after the brace comes off as he doesn't even seem to be looking forward to it?

If you can engage him in a discussion about his future, and his role in farming in the future, you will probably see many dark and irrational predictions, and these are what are depressing him.  Helping him regain perspective and do joint problem solving about these predictions will be the best medicine you can give him...
